Rosemary oil is an oil that comes from a rosemary plant. Rosemary is a perennial plant, meaning it lives more than two years. Rosemary has a strong, refreshing scent and is widely used in hair care, skincare, and aromatherapy. It is native to the Mediterranean and is used for cooking and as a healing herb. You may even know some plant ladies with a rosemary plant in their home gardens. There is some debate around whether rosemary oil promotes hair growth, but research shows major benefits of rosemary oil on health, skin, and hair. Rosemary oil isoften talked about in natural hair conversations, so we are here to spill all the tea on if it’s good for your hair.

Is Rosemary Beneficial?

So, first, you may be wondering, is rosemary oil good for your hair? The short answer is yes! People use rosemary to encourage hair growth for all hair types. Many different essential oils promote healthy hair, but rosemary oil is at the top of the list. The benefits of rosemaryessential oil are:

  • Stimulates growth and thickness: rosemary oil improves blood circulation by carrying more oxygen to your scalp and promoting healthy hair follicle growth.
  • Revives dull hair: the rosemary plant has the powerful ingredient carnosic acid to help nourish the scalp and heal nerve damage.
  • Soothes dry and itchy scalp:rosemary oil improves hydration to calm the scalp irritation and itchiness that can cause hair loss.

In a study done in 2015, researcherstested rosemary oil against minoxidil, an over-the-counter medication used for hair loss treatment. Over six months, researchers treated one group ofparticipants with hair loss using minoxidil and the other groupusing rosemary oil. After six months, the results found that both of them promote hair regrowth similarly, and rosemary oil was less likely to cause itching than minoxidil. Rosemary oil is the better option for those who have allergies or are prone to scalp irritation.

Another study using animals found that exposing mice suffering from hair loss to rosemary leaf extract helped to improve hair regrowth over time. However, since this study was carried out on mice, it doesn’t 100% prove the results would be the same for humans.

A 2017 study found that rosemary oil may help to kill fungi and bacteria. This means rosemary oil might effectively treat hair loss due to an infection or problems with the scalp.

Among a few others, these studies show some evidence of rosemary oil treating hair loss, but the evidence is not extensive. This does not mean that rosemary oil is ineffective; it simply means there currently isn’t enough research to say whether it is treating hair loss. Rosemary oil is not an FDA-approved product for hair loss treatment, but itdoesn't mean there aren’t incredible benefits to it. Rosemary oil is excellent for those who want to use natural alternatives to stimulate healthy hair growth, revive thinning hair, and soothe a dry scalp.
