Curly Girl Hair Care Guide For Warmer Weather

Spring is here and summer is right around the corner, and that means it’s time to get in some sun action and enjoy the weather!  The warmer weather is filled with fun events like family reunions, BBQs, beach days, and lots of outdoor activities — but you can't forget to protect your hair.

Your body needs protection from the sun, and so does your hair. You may think the sun won't harm your hair, but that is not necessarily true. The sun can be very damaging to our hair if we don't take proper precautions to protect it. So, just as you switched up your hair regimen for the winter, it is time to take a look again at your regimen to tweak a few things. Here are some hair care tips to help you keep your hair looking its best.

Wear a Hat When Possible

If you are headed out to the beach or a backyard barbecue, grab a hat will match your outfit. Stylish hats will help you keep your curls safe from the sun. Not only are hats a very cute accessory to add to any style, plus they also keep your hair safe from the sun while you are outdoors.

Your Leave-In Conditioner Is Never Out of Season

Don't forget your leave-in conditioner no matter what! Your organic leave-in conditioner should be a staple product in your regimen for every season, and that includes the summer.

Heavy moisturizers are not the best for the spring or summer because they can weigh your hair down, which we don’t want. Opt for a light moisturizer like our White Peony Ultra Moisturizing Leave-In Conditioner. The White Peony Leave-In Conditioner is great because it is an excellent way to provide your hair with moisture. The first ingredient is water, which helps prevents dry hair and also quenches hair dryness. It also includes other nurturing ingredients for your hair.

It's Cool to Co-Wash

No one wants to go through a complete wash day every time you want to re-style your hair — that's where co-washing comes in to help you out. In the summer months, co-washing can be a quick and easy way to refresh and restyle your hair mid-week, and it also help add moisture back into your hair.  Warmer weather means that we sweat more and products can build up easily on our scalp. Co-washing with the Mielle Organics Detangling Co-Wash is an excellent choice to refresh and clean your hair in between wash days.

Don’t Forget to Deep Condition

Deep conditioning is always a crucial step whether it’s winter, spring, or summer. Weekly deep conditioning will infuse moisture back into your hair. Mielle’s Babassu Oil and Mint Deep Conditioner is an excellent choice for the warmer months because it is a deep-penetrating conditioner that is made with complex amino acids from wheat, soy, and other natural ingredients that help restore moisture to damaged and dry hair.

LOC That Moisture In

In any season, you want to make sure your hair stays moisturized, so you want to find products and a routine that seal that moisture in. You have probably heard of the LOC method by now, but if you haven’t, it is a process in which you apply an liquid (L), oil (O), and cream (C) to your hair to seal in moisture after washing. This method also helps to retain moisture for long periods of time. Use a good moisturizing styler like Mielle’s Brazilian Curly Cocktail Curl Cream or even a curly hair gel such as our Honey & Ginger Styling Gel.

Rock a Protective Style

When it’s hot outside. the last thing you want to have to think about is your hair. That’s where protective styling comes in. You can switch it up and try out box braids, faux locs, mini twists, Marley twists, goddess braids, and so much more. Make sure that you are also taking care of your hair underneath while protective styling. Using a leave-in conditioner on your hair like the White Peony Ultra Moisturizing Leave-In Conditioner will help to keep it moisturized while in a protective style.

Protect Your Hair While You Swim

Before swimming, wet your hair and apply oil to help prevent your hair from absorbing chlorine or saltwater. After swimming, clarify or shampoo your hair, moisturize, and then style as usual. If you are a frequent swimmer, then it is probably best to invest in a swim cap to protect your hair.

Reduce Heat

Lay off using a lot of heat on your hair during the summer, since the sun is already very drying on natural hair. The summertime is a good time to air dry your wash-and-go styles and twists.

Hydrate From The Inside Out

In the warmer months, it’s especially important to keep hydrated. Just like our body needs to be hydrated so does our hair. Hydrating from the inside out will help you feel good on the inside and help your hair look good on the outside.
