The Best Deep Conditioning Tips for Natural Hair

When I first went natural, I didn’t really incorporate deep conditioning into my weekly hair care routine, but it didn’t take me long to realize how important it was. Deep conditioning is such an important part of a healthy hair regimen, especially if your hair is color treated or heat styled often. Not only does it improve and maintain the moisture-protein balance of our hair, but it can also help improve elasticity.

Interested in adding deep conditioning to your hair care routine? Read on for some tips on how to get the most out of your products, and explore Mielle’s collection of organic hair conditioner to find one that works for you!

Assess Your Hair’s Needs

Our hair needs both moisture and protein to thrive, but you need to understand your hair to know how much you need of each. While adding moisture is always key, adding protein when your hair is healthy, low porosity, and free of chemical processing can do more harm than good. Excess protein coats the hair strand and hardens, and it can cause the hair to break. It can also block moisture from penetrating the hair follicle as well.

Follow Directions

All deep conditioners are not created equal. So while, generally, most deep conditioners are left on the hair for 15 to 30 minutes before rinsing, it’s always best to follow the manufacturer’s directions so you ensure you get the best results.

Use Heat

To help your hair better absorb the products you use, try adding heat! Heat helps to open up the hair strands so that the deep conditioner can penetrate the strand and go to work. To add heat to your hair care routine, try wrapping your head in a warm towel, using a heated head wrap, or putting on a plastic cap and sitting under a hooded dryer.

Try Steaming

Give hair steaming a try! If you have low-porosity hair, then steaming is a great way to help hydrating products penetrate the strands and improve the moisture balance of your hair. Steaming assists in opening the cuticle layer, which makes it easier to infuse products into the hair. This helps you get the most out of your conditioning and deep conditioning treatments, and can even save you money because you can use less product to get the same great results.

Try Mielle

For a great deep conditioning experience, turn to Mielle Organics products! My personal favorite is the Mielle Babassu Oil Mint Deep Conditioner because it infuses the hair with both protein and moisture for elasticity. Babassu oil is high in sterols and tocopherols to improve hair and scalp health. It is also enriched with fatty acids and natural oils that help reduce frizz and flyaways. If you’re looking for a protein-free option, then Mielle’s Hydrating Conditioner is ultra moisturizing and protein-free, made for soft and silky hair and formulated with Sub-Saharan African mongongo oil to restore health and shine. It’s perfect for protein sensitive hair.

If you haven’t gotten serious about deep conditioning, now is the time to add this essential step to your hair care routine. Why not start with Mielle Organics deep conditioners?
