5 Tips to Help Make Your Blow Out Last Longer

I’ve been natural for nine years, and I spent about eight of those years afraid of getting my hair straightened. A few months ago, I was overdue for my fall trim, so I scheduled an appointment with one of my stylists – Shalleen at Salon Noa – for a blowout and reshape service. Since I did not want to cause any potential heat damage by flat ironing my hair to maintain the look, it was important to me to know how to make the style last longer.

I decided to chat with Fawnne (Shalleen's mentor and owner at Salon Noa) to get the tea on what she as a professional stylist would recommend to maintain your natural hair blowout. Here are the five tips that she recommended for during and after your blowout to help your style last a long time:

Tip #1: Treat your hair during the shampoo/conditioning process.

There are definitely some things that you or your stylist can do during the process that will affect how long the style lasts. If your hair is lacking moisture, it will seek it from the atmosphere, which will cause your hair to revert quickly. Ensuring your hair and scalp are clean and conditioned, properly moisturized, and protein balanced are all key, as well as using thermal protection and frizz-preventing products. Start with Mielle’s Babassu Conditioning Shampoo, followed by our Babassu and Mint Deep Conditioner, and finishing with our Mongongo Oil Thermal and Heat Protectant Spray.

Tip #2: Trim your ends.

Split ends result in frizziness and can ruin the look of your blowout style. Trimming any dead or split ends after your blowout will not only extend the life of your style, but also help with maintenance. You can also try rice water split end therapy that’s light enough for daily use and can help to repair damaged hair.

Tip #3: Pin curl your hair a night.

Once you’re all done with styling and it's time to go to bed, you’re facing the most crucial step of making your blowout last longer. Pin-curling your hair helps to extend your blowout style and keep your curls, and it can help you avoid creating frizz while you sleep. Remember: small pin curls create a more curly look, while large pin curls provide more body.

Tip #4: Add a little oil each night.

Rub a nickel-sized amount of oil to your hair before wrapping or pin-curling your hair a night. The oil will coat the cuticle and take away flyaways to give your hair a sleek look in the morning. Mielle’s natural lightweight Mint Almond Oil is perfect to use because it won’t weigh your hair down. We know your hair and scalp will love the sweet, refreshing results of almond oil and peppermint!

Tip #5: Use a wrap cap or a silk/satin scarf.

Once you’ve wrapped your hair or pin curled it, be sure to use a wrap cap or a silk/satin scarf to hold the wrap or pin-curl set in place as you sleep at night. This can also ensure that your hair is kept neatly and maintained during workouts.

If you want your blowout to last, make sure you treat your hair well during the styling process. Once the style is complete, it will take some commitment to nightly maintenance to make it last longer, but the results will be worth your time and effort.
