Best Tips For Moisturizing Natural Hair
July 19, 2017 3 min read
No matter what time of year it is, you should always make sure your hair stays moisturized. Whether you need to find a new
hair moisturizer that actually works for your hair type or you need to drink more water throughout the day, it’s important to create habits that will keep your hair strong and healthy. Moisture is one of the areas where women with
natural hair in particular struggle. Keeping your hair properly moisturized will decrease the chances of your hair breaking, increase lengthen retention, and also help with the manageability of your hair. Many women think that they can simply moisturize their hair with an oil and that’s it. Unfortunately, oil by itself will not moisturize your hair — instead, it will leave your hair feeling oily and clog your pores.
Here are a few hair care tips to help you keep your hair moisturized and healthy through any season!
Deep Condition on a Regular Basis
You should deep condition your hair often — most curly girls deep condition their hair on a weekly basis. Deep conditioning helps combat dry hair, and Mielle’s Babassu Oil and Mint Deep Conditioner is excellent for helping your stay moisturized. Our deep conditioner infuses hair with protein and moisture to restore dry and damaged hair. To get the best out of your deep conditioning session, use heat or a steamer to help open up the cuticles of your hair and allow the moisture in.
Pre-Poo Your Hair
A pre-poo treatment can not only assist you with your wash process, but it also helps to moisturize your hair. When you pre-poo, it can help prevent moisture loss before your shampoo process. If you don't know how to pre-poo, you should start by applying your favorite oil. We recommend our Mint Almond Oil! Leave it on your hair for about 15 to 20 minutes, and then rinse. Then, you will begin your shampoo process.
Steam Your Hair
Steaming your hair is so beneficial! Steaming helps to add moisture and elasticity to your hair, making it beneficial for any season. If you do not have a steamer, you can use a plastic cap and sit under a hooded dryer for 15 to 30 minutes to achieve the same effect.
Co-Wash Your Hair
If you are not a fan of washing your hair with shampoo, you should try co-washing your hair. A co-wash is milder than shampoo, and it provides conditioning properties that can help combat dryness. Our Detangling Co-Wash works well for thin or thick, curly hair and is best used in between shampoos. It helps to remove impurities without stripping your hair of its natural oils and gently cleanses and conditions your hair.
Protect Your Hair
Keeping your hair protected at night is very important for keeping your hair moisturized. Cotton sheets and pillowcases will suck the moisture out of your hair, so make sure to sleep on a satin pillowcase or with a satin bonnet to help prevent moisture loss.
Seal Your Hair
Sealing your hair will help lock the moisture into your hair stands, and you can do it yourself by using the LOC method. You apply your leave-in conditioner, oil, and then your cream or styler. If the LOC method does not work for you, then adjust your method for your hair type. LCO may work better for you!
Drink Water
This may not be new to you, but it is important. Healthy hair starts from the inside, so – just like our skin – our hair needs moisture from the inside out. If your hair lacks moisture, it could be because you are not getting enough water. Hair that is deprived of proper moisture will remain dry and can lead to breakage. That is why it is so important to make sure you drink water to stay hydrated and support healthy hair. It’s also important to use natural hair moisturizer products to help repair and keep your hair moisturized.
