How to Care for Color Treated Natural Hair | Mielle

By Toia Barry

There comes a time when we ladies get the itch to switch up our style. If you've decided to experiment with a new hair color, consider a few things you should do to keep that color popping and your hair healthy. If you are looking for tips on colored natural hair, you have come to the right place. In this article, we are going to be explaining how to keep dyed hair healthy and strong from root to tip.

Before You Color...

Before you even head to the salon or attempt to do your own color, there are some things you should consider. Below are some curly hair dyed tips to keep in mind.

Is My Hair in Good Condition for Color?

With hair dye comes some level of damage simply because it opens up the hair cuticle to lift your natural color and deposit the new one. This leaves the hair dry and porous, which can lead to breakage for any hair type. If your hair is already suffering from issues like dryness and split ends, then coloring your hair will only add to the problem. Before you choose to go the colored natural hair route, consider fixing split ends by getting regular haircuts and using deep conditioning treatments. You may want to reconsider until your hair is in a healthier state.

Can I Handle the Upkeep of Colored Hair?

Naturally, textured hair needs a lot of TLC. Once you color it, there's even less room for slacking off in your hair care regimen. Are you ready for that? If your current lifestyle and schedule leaves you with little time for regular care, then you should probably hold off on the color. Plus, hair dye can damage curly hair texture if your hair is already damaged.

After You Color...

Use a Color-Safe, Hydrating Shampoo

Our hair is already prone to dryness, right? And the color will make it even drier… it’s inevitable. The best thing for your hair in this state is a cleanser that won’t strip the color OR the natural oils in your hair and scalp. Mielle’s Babassu Oil Conditioning Sulfate-Free Shampoo is an effective, gentle cleanser that also infuses moisture into your strands. Hair-strengthening almond protein is also a plus for color-treated hair.

Deep Condition Regularly

Your hair is at its most porous state when color-treated. This means that moisture escapes your strands much faster than normal. Deep conditioning is yet another way to make sure your hair is getting all the moisture it needs so that your strands don’t succumb to the straw-like condition many complain about when rocking color. The hair is also weaker in this state, so protein is needed. Our Babassu Oil & Mint Deep Conditioner is both a protein and moisture replenisher, perfect for your colored hair. Restore moisture and strengthen your hair in one shot!

Moisturize When Styling

Make your color-treated hair less likely to break or split by using products that hydrate when styling. Moisturizing and sealing in that moisture is your priority now. You can kill two birds with one stone with our moisturizing hair butter to support healthy hair. With hydrating aloe, moisturizing and strengthening avocado oil, plus other oils and nutrients, it's sure to keep your colored hair soft and shiny. Of course, the good ole LOC method works too!

Wear Protective Styles

Keep your hair in low-manipulation, protective styles as often as you can. This will help you retain moisture and put less stress on the hair, both of which means less breakage. They say "blondes have more fun, " but there's nothing fun about it if your hair is dry, brittle, and damaged. It IS possible to have healthy-looking, color-treated hair if you just do right by it! If you have color treated hair, make sure you have a deep conditioning routine to support natural healthy hair and strength.
