3 Steps to Get the Perfect Twist Out With Mielle | Mielle

Styling options for those of us with natural hair are endless, and yet there is one hairstyle that always comes to mind when thinking of natural styles. That style is the famous twist out. The twist out is very popular, and it is a beautiful hairstyle, but let’s be honest — it does not always turn out the way we want.

Achieving the perfect twist out is a goal for many naturalistas, but many have a hard time trying to figure out how just how to achieve it. For many naturalistas, your very first twist out may have been a total disaster, and you just couldn’t figure out why. Others have voiced complaints about common problems with their twist outs that include frizz, flyaways, and the lack of curl definition. It seemed like a mystery that needed to be solved, and Mielle is here to help!. You may feel that you don’t have the perfect hair texture to achieve a great twist-out, but that is not true! Any naturalista can achieve a good twist out if you take the proper steps and use great products.

Before we get into the steps on how to achieve the perfect twist out, there is one thing you need to know before you get started — if your hair is not properly moisturized when styling your twist out, then your twist out will always be a fail. Moisture is the key to any great-looking hairstyle. So the next time you attempt a twist out, make sure your hair is properly moisturized. Now, here is how you can achieve the perfect twist out in three easy steps!

Step One: Clean, Condition, and Detangle

Most hairstyles turn out better when they are worked on hair that has been freshly cleansed and conditioned. We recommend using Mielle Organics’ Babassu Conditioning Sulfate-Free Shampoo for dry and curly hair types to begin the process. It is is a gentle cleanser that will remove buildup, but it won’t leave your hair feeling stripped.

It is also important that you detangle your hair thoroughly in order to get the best definition with your hairstyle. Proper detangling will help you prevent breakage, and – most importantly – detangling plays a role in how well your hairstyle will turn out.

To make the process as seamless as possible, part your hair into four sections and use a good leave-in conditioner such as our Organic White Peony Leave-In Conditioner to help you get all the tangles out, starting from ends to roots after washing your hair. Remember to be gentle, because rough detangling can lead to breakage.

Step Two: Use the Right Products

Now that your hair is clean, detangled, and conditioned, it is time to move on to finding the right products to help you set your twist out. The best products to use are products that will help moisturize your hair and set your twists and define your curls. It is best to start your twist out on damp hair to help set your style. Choose from our list of organic curly hair gel products, such as our Brazilian Curl Cream, and start styling your hair.

The LOC (liquid/oil/cream) method is a great technique to ensure you get the proper definition and moisture with your twist out. You will hydrate your hair with a water-based product first, which is your liquid. You will then seal in the moisture with an oil, and then apply a cream, gel, or mousse product to close the hair cuticle, which helps to prevent moisture loss. This is the best method for a twist out because your hair will be properly moisturized, resulting in better curl definition. Mielle’s Organic White Peony Leave-In Conditioner in paired with our Mint Almond Oil is perfect combo for the L (liquid) and the O (oil) in the LOC Method.

Choose our Brazilian Curly Cocktail Curl Cream for step C – cream – in the LOC method to achieve a defined, frizz-free twist out. It has a combination of Brazilian oils that absorb into the hair shaft to lock in moisture, plus it gives you great definition. Your hair needs moisture for a great twist out, and you want high definition for an end result you’ll love. It is also important to make sure that you apply enough product to each section prior to twisting your hair for the proper moisture and definition in each twist.

Step Three: Untwist with Caution

Yes, the way you unravel your twists plays a major role in how your twist out comes out. In fact, this final step in your twist out process can really make or break your hairstyle.

You will want to make sure your hair is completely dry before you unravel your twists. If you untwist your hair while it is still wet, you could cause frizz and lack definition in your hairstyle. To prevent frizz, you can use Mielle’s Mint Almond Oil to help you unravel your twists. The best technique is to start at the bottom of each twist and carefully unravel up. If you want more volume with your twist out, then you can use a pick to lift your roots, but make sure not to pick your hair too much because it can cause more frizz.

Excellent information and instruction. How often should they be done? For the past 2.5 years I was twisting, or plaiting my hair every night off and on. But my hair seems thinner and not growing as fast as I think it should. I’ve just really started using oil and adjusting to oiling my scalp. I was experiencing shedding every time and using a different line than yours. I’m loving what this line does to my hair. Barely any tangles or shedding. Thank you for making an effort to help your customers use your products properly.
