In the natural hair world, we talk so much about moisture, moisture, and more MOISTURE! Why? Because highly textured hair, in general, struggles with keeping moisture locked in. Due to its shape, the natural sebum (oil) from the scalp has a tough time traveling the whole length of our strands.
However, we don’t talk about hair porosity nearly as much. This is actually the thing that could make or break a hairstyle and the health of your hair overall. Why?
Each person’s hair has some level of porosity or the ability to absorb and hold moisture. Some of us have hair that’s somewhere in the middle or have just the right amount of porosity. Others have hair that either absorbs and loses moisture very quickly or is barely able to receive and retain moisture at all.
Here are a few product recommendations that should work for you depending on your porosity level:
Low porosity hair is more resistant to moisture. The cuticle layer of the hair is mostly closed so water and product will have a hard time penetrating the way you’d want it to. So, what can you do?
Starting with the cleansing step, ourMongongo Oil Exfoliating Shampoo, while washing with warm water, will work wonders to gently lift the hair cuticle and really get in there to clarify your strands and your scalp without drying the hair. Highly emollient mongongo oil and other nourishing oils keep the hair moisturized. Shampooing would be more beneficial to low porosity hair.
A great follow-up, naturally, is its companion, ourProtein-Free Hydrating Conditioner w/ Mongongo Oil. This moisturizing conditioner will help soften and bring strands back to life. Using a hair steamer is very helpful to open up the cuticle so your product will be more effective.
When it comes to styling, ourAvocado Moisturizing Hair Milk contains oils that will penetrate the hair shaft and aloe vera juice to keep hair hydrated. To give your wash & gos, twist-outs or rod sets some hold, our Honey & Ginger Styling Gel is the perfect finisher to give you a manageable hold while hydrating the hair.
If you’re on this end of the spectrum, your hair has no problem receiving moisture but it will escape just as fast because the cuticle layer is mostly open or raised. A moisturizing shampoo like our Babassu Mint Conditioning Shampoo will improve strength and elasticity to dry, high porosity hair thanks to Almond protein and Babassu Oil. Products containing protein can help “fill in the gaps” in the cuticle so that your hair will retain the moisture you put in. Try ourBabassu and Mint Deep Conditioner to give you the best of both worlds with moisture plus a boost of protein.
OurPomegranate & Honey Collection includes stylers with a thicker consistency that works great on coarse, high porosity hair. TheLeave-In Conditioner penetrates the hair to give shine and hydration. If you’re a wash & go or rod set kinda girl, try ourPomegranate & Honey Curl Sculpting Custard! For twist-outs, braid-outs, bantu-knot outs, give theCurl Smoothie andTwisting Souffle a try for maximum hydration, definition and shine!
Don’t forget to seal in that moisture! High porosity hair needs this the most. OurMint Almond Oil is a crowd favorite for locking in moisture which will aid in length retention and overall health!
