In the natural hair world, we talk so much about moisture, moisture, and more MOISTURE! Why? Because highly textured hair, in general, struggles with keeping moisture locked in. Due to its shape, the natural sebum (oil) from the scalp has a tough time traveling the whole length of our strands.
However, we don’t talk about hair porosity nearly as much. This is actually the thing that could make or break a hairstyle and the health of your hair overall. Why? Each person’s hair has some level of porosity, or the ability to absorb and hold moisture. Some of us have just the right amount of porosity, while others have hair that either absorbs and loses moisture very quickly or is barely able to receive and retain moisture at all.
Find the right organic hair care products for your hair’s porosity levels with help from Mielle. We’ve included a few recommendations for low- and high-porosity hair. Not sure what your hair porosity is? Check out a previous blog post we wrote on the topic and then check back in here to find the right products for your hair care routine!
Low porosity hair is more resistant to moisture. The cuticle layer of the hair is mostly closed, so water and hair care products have a hard time penetrating the way you’d want them to. So, what can you do?
Start with the cleansing step. Use Mielle’s Mongongo Oil Exfoliating Shampoo while washing with warm water, and it can work wonders to gently lift the hair cuticle and really get in there to clarify your strands and your scalp without drying the hair. Highly emollient mongongo oil and other nourishing oils keep the hair moisturized.
Shampooing is beneficial to low porosity hair, and a great follow-up, naturally, is its companion: our Protein-Free Hydrating Conditioner with Mongongo Oil. This moisturizing organic hair conditioner will help soften and bring strands back to life. You can also help open up the cuticle with a hair steamer, which can make whichever product you choose more effective.
When it comes to styling, our Avocado Moisturizing Hair Milk contains oils that will penetrate the hair shaft, as well as aloe vera juice to keep hair hydrated. To give your wash-and-gos, twist-outs, or rod sets some hold, our Honey & Ginger Styling Gel is the perfect finisher to give you a manageable hold while hydrating the hair.
If you’re on this end of the spectrum, your hair has no problem receiving moisture. However, that moisture will escape just as fast because the cuticle layer is mostly open or raised. It’s worth trying out somehigh porosity hair products that are made specifically to tackle the open cuticle, leaving you with moisturized and shiny hair!
A moisturizing shampoo like our Babassu Mint Conditioning Shampoo will improve the strength and elasticity of dry, high-porosity hair thanks to almond protein and babassu oil. Products containing protein can help “fill in the gaps” in the cuticle so that your hair will retain the moisture you add.
Try our Babassu and Mint Deep Conditioner to give you the best of both worlds: moisture plus a boost of protein. Our Pomegranate & Honey collection also includes products with a thicker consistency that works great on coarse, high-porosity hair. Our organic leave-in conditioner penetrates the hair to add shine and hydration.
Mielle’s Pomegranate & Honey collection also has a lot to offer when it comes to styling. If you’re a wash-and-go or rod set kind of girl, try our Pomegranate & Honey Curl Sculpting Custard! For twist-outs, braid-outs, bantu-knot outs, give the Curl Smoothie and Twisting Souffle a try for maximum hydration, definition, and shine! You also don’t want to forget to seal in that moisture — high-porosity hair needs this the most. Our Mint Almond Oil is a crowd favorite for locking in moisture, which will aid in length retention and overall health!
