7 Tips to Avoid Frizz in The Summer | Mielle

Now that it has gotten warmer outside, it is becoming harder to keep the frizz away. The question every curly girl has is: how do you prevent frizz in the summer months?

Unfortunately, there is no surefire way to eliminate frizz or the other effects that the humid weather has on natural hair. Our thick, curly hair is naturally porous, which means it allows more water in. That’s why curly hair gets frizzy when the humidity increases in the air. Don't fret though — there are some ways that you can minimize frizz during the warmer months. Here are a few hair care tips to help you enjoy summer and fight the frizz!

Embrace It

Frizz happens, period. So rather than fighting it, just embrace it! When you wear your hair in its most natural state, like a wash-and-go, it is easy to manage your hair when it’s humid outside. Let your hair be free and embrace it!

Use a Moisturizing Shampoo

Opt for a moisturizing shampoo in the summer. A great shampoo like Mielle’s Babassu Oil Sulfate-Free Shampoo is perfect for fighting frizz. It contains babassu oil, which helps moisturize and strengthen your hair.

Keep in mind that it’s best to shampoo only weekly or bi-weekly so that you don’t dry your hair out. The natural oils that build up in your hair are good at helping keep frizz at bay. You can also co-wash with our Detangling Co-Wash in between your wash day as an added step if you want to refresh your hair.

Trim Your Ends

Split ends can be the beginning of frizz, so stop the problem before it starts with a trim. Make sure that you are getting your ends trimmed on a regular basis. You should consult with your stylist on the frequency of your trims, but most curly girls get their ends trimmed every six to eight weeks.

Deep Condition Regularly

We hope you are not tired of hearing about how great deep conditioning is for your hair! Deep conditioning your hair is crucial to preventing frizz, and it’s best to treat your hair to a deep conditioning session at least once a week. Use a deep conditioner that is deep penetrating like our Babassu Oil and Mint Deep Conditioner.

Mielle’s deep conditioner is a protein/moisture replenisher and will restore dry and damaged hair. It is also enriched with fatty acids that provide your hair with softness., and has natural oils and Cetearyl alcohol to help reduce frizz and flyaways.

How to Avoid Frizz With Natural Hair

Do a Hot Oil Treatment

Hot oil treatments are a great way to infuse your hair with moisture to help reduce the appearance of frizz, split ends, and fly-aways. You shouldn't do a hot oil treatment daily, but if you have dry and frizzy hair, then you can benefit from them on a regular basis.

Avoid Heat

Straightening your hair may not be the best option in the summer. Your hair will likely swell and frizz up as soon as it gets humid, so try to avoid styles that require heat if you want to stay away from frizz.

Wear a Protective Style

Protective styling such as box braids, twists, and buns are great at helping to fight humidity during the summer. You won’t have to worry about your hair reverting when you choose protective styling!
